A former insurance company executive and recognized leader in the property/casualty insurance industry, John serves as Managing Director and Partner of Strategic Agency Partners (SAP), an agency network operating in New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania. SAP is a fast-growing organization with more than 35 agencies and over 40 retail offices. SAP was recognized in 2023 and 2024 as an All-Star Insurance Network, one of the five named as the very best based on a survey of network agencies by Insurance Business America based on a blind survey of insurance agencies across the country.

John serves on the Agency Advisory Council formed by NJM Insurance Group, the Partnership Exchange (agency council) of Franklin Mutual Insurance Group (FMI/POM) and the national Small Business Agency Council of UFG (United Fire Group).

With long-time friend, José Sosa, they are establishing a new highly specialized and focused insurance agency, Grupo Sosa Insurance (GSI). The agency specializes in creating mutually rewarding partnerships with Hispanic business associations to drive value to their members. Currently, GSI has formal relationships with associations in downstate New York, eastern Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.

He is the former CEO and shareholder of ANE, Agency Network Exchange, LLC. Under John’s leadership, ANE became the 11th largest agency network in the nation with more than $1B in combined agency premiums. For the 36 months ending December 31, 2018, ANE produced $92M in new business premium to participating insurance carriers. During his time at ANE, John served on several insurance company advisory boards and councils including Selective Insurance, AmTrust Financial (national) and Nationwide (national).

For more than a decade he was the chief lobbyist and spokesman for the Garden State’s $12 billion property/casualty insurance industry. As president of the Insurance Council of New Jersey, he was directly involved in the development and passage of major legislative and regulatory reforms including the comprehensive legislative initiative to reform New Jersey’s automobile regulatory system in 2003. He also served as chairman of the state-mandated commission that handled the politically sensitive issue of redrawing the geographic boundaries for automobile insurance rating for the first time in more than sixty years.

Prior to joining ANE, he was Director of Personal Lines Sales and Marketing for OneBeacon Insurance Group, Ltd., responsible for the company’s personal lines sales and marketing activities in eight states as well as serving as corporate secretary for New Jersey Skylands Insurance Company. John joined OneBeacon in 2003 as vice president for strategic initiatives for New Jersey Skylands Insurance Association, a reciprocal entity managed by OneBeacon. He represented OneBeacon on the advisory board of Trusted Choice®, the agency marketing organization of the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America (IIABA), and the Insurance Council of New Jersey where he served as a member of the Executive Committee and Treasurer.

In addition to his business activities, John has been active in local and state politics for more than four decades. He served as an aide to then New Jersey Senate President Carmen Orechio, as an intern on the NJ Senate Majority staff, managed several local and county campaigns, served as a local Republican municipal party chairman and on the executive committee of the Burlington County (NJ) Republican Party. He has also run for municipal office.

Active in his community, he is a former chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey and of the Board of Trustees of Holy Cross Academy in Delran, New Jersey. He served for a number of years on the Advisory Council of the Court Appointed Special Advocates of New Jersey.

A graduate of Montclair State College and Leadership New Jersey 2002, he and his wife, Ellen, are the proud parents of John T. Tiene, a 2011 graduate (cum laude) of Fairfield University and currently an Associate Vice President for Financial Institutions at QBE North America.
